THTR 327 Gender in Performance: Cross-Dressing on the American Stage

An inquiry into the strategies of drag performance as practiced by Charles Busch, Lypsinka, La Gran Scena, WOW Cafe and others. Questions to be explored: How does drag performance deconstruct gender? Is there a similar political aspect to drag performance in male and female cross-dressing? Discussions will be augmented by readings from contemporary feminist and queer theorists, as well as videotaped performances of various drag artists. A major research paper is required.
